Grand Blocks, A&P Tyne, Waggonway Road, Hebburn

The work consisted of the careful dismantling and processing of 2000 tonne of grand block units and sponsons which were fabricated from steel.  The three storey grand block units were to be erected onto a specialist ship as accommodation units but when the contract fell through our expert dismantling division was called upon to quickly and safely process the steel for removal from site. Due to the shear size and weight of the grand blocks they could not be moved from there position and had to be dismantled in situ. The Grand blocks posed particular problems due to their close proximity to the main access road, existing buildings and adjacent the heavily populated dock.

Under intense pressure from the client due to the hazards involved we carefully planned the work to ensure we covered all possibilities. We put in careful measures for the control of traffic management on site and worked various shifts to avoid the dock peak times. Strict safe system of works were also developed for work at height, noise control, protection of tarmac and working hours to counteract fatigue of workers and noise complaints from residents.

Once all safety and environmental points had been covered the dismantling work commenced. The grand blocks were dismantled using a mixture of flame cutting techniques working in tandem with X2 45 tonne excavators. All sections of steel were carefully lowered away from the existing buildings. Once on ground level the grand blocks were further processed by our competent burners before loading away by our heavy haulage division.
